About this Spatial Dataset

National boundary polygons for the 20 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, simplified for web rendering rather than for cadastral accuracy. The geometries are big enough to make polygon operations interesting — Chile is long and thin, Brazil is enormous, and several countries have offshore island territories that make them genuine MultiPolygons — which makes this a good dataset for exercising buffer, union and point-in-polygon logic before you point it at production data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these boundaries accurate enough for analysis?+

They are simplified for fast web rendering, so use them for visualization, prototyping and teaching — not for area calculations, legal boundaries, or anything where a few kilometres of vertex error matters. For precise work, source the full-resolution Natural Earth or national cadastral data.

Which countries are included?+

The 20 countries conventionally grouped as Latin America: the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking states of North, Central and South America plus the Caribbean, including Mexico, Brazil, Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
